Education and Democracy are two
sides of one coin in our societies in Europe. Democracy is at several levels in Europe under heavy pressure. We can look at political developments in certain member states like HU and PL, look at attitudes toward minorities such as migrants or LGBT, or look at the level of agreement of citizens with the political system and political performance.
Deregulation, the rise of authoritarian and populist ideas, political decision making “without any alternatives”, new conflict lines and other aspects - should be a question of deep concern for us all.
An engaged and proactive attitude of citizens and a strengthened democratic civil society seem to be important factors helping to face these challenges. Therefore, Education for Democratic Citizenship seems to be more important than ever.

To modernise education means also to take thoroughly into consideration the effects of educational modernization on democratic development in our societies. Education needs to respond to a shrinking labour market and change of employment offers, to a loss of work through digitalisation, but also to the potential of digitalisation for people, social wellbeing and work.

STEPS - experts and practitioners discussed influence of populism on EDC in youth work

From 01.-05. November a group of 25 educators and experts from the STEPS partnership met in Almunecar (ESP) to discuss key findings from 12 national studies on the relationship between populism in politics, radicalisation and de-radicalisation of young people and its contextualisation to EDC/HRE work with young people in 12 European countries.

The participants introduced the key findings from 12 national studies, which concentrated on three sets of questions:
* a contextualisation of the terms of political populism, radicalisation and post-truth as it appears on the national levels regards to youth work and EDC/HRE with young people
* a description on the effects of the political discourses and programs on EDC /HRE with young people resulting from the entry of right wing populist parties to the political levels (legal frames, programs form local - national levels)
*  an introduction to existing educational/youth policies and on educational concepts of youth work to work on the topics of populism, post-truth and radicalisation in EDC/HRE settings.


Based on the commonalities and specifics of the findings, together with Stefan Manevski from the COE youth department the partners discussed the relation and consequences for EDC/HRE in youth work related to the implementation of existing European and global political frames on local, national and European levels: These frames are e.g. provided by the EU Paris Declaration, the COE European Charter on EDC/HRE (and its review 2017), the SDG´s Goal 4, the COE Recommendation on youth work and the COE ENTER! Recommendation on young peoples access to social rights.

Of specific importance was the discussion on current European Union Councils conclusions on the role of the youth sector  in an integrated and cross-sectoral approach to preventing and combating violent radicalisation of young people.
These often well- intended frames need to be enshrined, set into practice and supported by policy making on the national levels: these levels are in most European countries since a longer time

#TEVIP - Transforming European Values Into Practice

Our new project partnership "#TEVIP - Transforming European Values Into Practice" has just started with a kick-Off meeting in Berlin.

The project is a E+ strategic partnership with the aim to develop educational tools that allow to learn something about the so called European Values.

What is a value and what makes it European? Seems to be an easy question, but while trying to answer, we realize that its actually more difficult the more we think about it.
From 2017 - 2020 the #TEVIP partners will work on this question and develop educational tools that enable us to explore how surprisingly complex things can get if we ask for European Values. Be assured the partners will come up with thrilling educational approaches...

STEPS - Survival Toolkit for EDC in Postfactual Societies - first project workshop

Is Youth Work in Europe challenged by populist movements, by post-truth and by radicalisation?


The first meeting of the STEPS project took place from 08-11.June 2017 at the youth educational centre wannseeForum, Berlin.
26 youth workers who are actively working on EDC/HRE with young people in 16 countries met in order to develop a common frame and understanding of what we name as populist challenge to EDC/HRE.
All over Europe we face the rise of so- called populist/national movements who promote a view on the world which can be characterized as white- supremacy, racist- ideology driven and is heavily contesting any views on society which build on a positive vision of inclusive, diverse, peaceful and HR embracing societies in Europe.
In some countries these ideas are already governmental reality: the comrades Orban, Kaczyński and their adepts actively undermining any ideas and work that develop pluralist based view on society with a EU that is rather helpless in counteracting, in a lot of countries with parties and movements already in power positions on the regional and local levels.

During the DARE general assembly the Open Source platform COMPETENDO presented their tools for facilitators. Competendo is committed to education for the development of key competencies with a focus on civic competencies. Competendo connects and empowers facilitators of different backgrounds and in diverse fields of education. COMPETENDO is partnering with DARE.
